This water tank kit is an essential part of the American railroad scene.
Water supply is essential for steam locomotives. So, in the old days, wooden water towers were installed every 20 miles (32 km) along the railroads in the United States, and sometimes a shed with a pump was attached to keep the tanks full.
Stops were established near the water tower, and these rural stations sometimes grew into "tank towns" consisting of a store and a few houses.
