A small island at the entrance to Manila Bay on the island of Luzon in the Philippines---Corregidor Island.
In the early years of the Second World War, the Japanese occupied the island, which had been turned into an ironclad sea fortress by the Americans.
However, six months before the end of the war, the island was reoccupied by the American forces led by MacArthur in an airborne drop operation.

A Japanese soldier runs through the fierce battlefield, where more than 10,000 Japanese and American troops died.

On the gun in his hand is a Japanese flag with a wish for "long life and good fortune".
The unsteady pose and gaze of the artist, as if for a moment he is about to notice something and stop, conveys the tension of the battlefield.
The work is also notable for its attention to detail, such as the upside-down letters that show through the back of the Japanese flag.
